A group of 6 veteran walkers who have travelled all over the UK and Europe completed 7 days of self guided walks in the Picos. The scenery was outstanding and varied from high mountain limestone peaks to open green pastures and the famous Cares gorge. Ibex Trex arrangements were first class on choice of walks quality hotels and taxi links. Overall a ‘must do’ destination for all walkers

Private Family Group of 13 – Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – September 2019

What a great week! Thank you for your support, including carrying my water bottle the last two days. I appreciate that you give an ‘old fellow’ like me the opportunity to keep trekking. I’m self conscious about my pace, and though I’ve actually done harder stuff (Tongarriro and Annapurna), I found the last day difficult, though I felt good until the downhill section, and was knackered on the last uphill bit.
Greg – Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada  – September 2019

Brilliant week of walking, eating and laughing. Really enjoyed the company and the holiday. Until next time.
Rebecca – Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – September 2019

Beverley and I agreed it was our best walking holiday so far. Scenery was stunning, the walks were a little harder than out usual hols (which of course we liked!) – particulary enjoyed the 1st day (despite the cable car start) but to be honest I enjoyed them all. It was so nice to see a different Spain i.e. green and lush grass.  I liked the villages we stayed in, accommodation all fine, and all food/wine etc was great (even the ‘eggy’ place. So all in all, big thumbs up!
Andrea –  Across The Picos De Europa – June 2019

Thanks again for a good holiday. You were right about the breakfast in Bilbao. It was super. Regards Val & The Hanliensian Rambling Club – 10 Days Group Picos De Europa – July 2019

Back home after such a wonderful hiking trip . I ventured all around Grazalema on my own without any difficulty . Your notebook on the guides was great . as were the accommodations .
I envy your job. Dan , can’t thank you enough for such a memorable trip . I hope to join you again in a few years . I intend to keep on hiking  and enjoying the great outdoors . Take care

Thanks for a lovely trip through the mountains Dan. It’s beautiful around there- nice group, yummy food, cute hotels and some good laughs. Enjoy the rest of your summer and thanks again for everything
Eimear – Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – May 2019

Thank you very much for the week. I really enjoyed the walks and company.
Anna – Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – May 2019

We had a great walking trip in the Sierra de Grazelema. We really appreciated your choice of places to stay. They were all full of character and style though the stone buildings of La Posada at Villaluenga were on the chilly side at this time of year!. We struck lucky with a run of beautiful spring days which I guess you had on your trip.
Patrick & Liz – Self Guided Sierra de Grazalema – April 2019

We wanted you to know that we thoroughly enjoyed our Las Alpujarras walk in February. The quality of the accommodation was excellent, and the staff/owners in all the hotels were very helpful. The evening meals were most enjoyable, and your suggested dining choices for Capiliera and Mecina were spot on.  We would have no hesitation in recommending this walk to others,…In summary, very well organised, great scenery and local life, and a lovely combination of walks.
Janet & Andris – Self Guided Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – February 2019

Good Morning Dan, thank you very much indeed for amending our holiday plans, it worked brilliantly to do the three days walking, have two days in Granada and the day in Malaga and the hotels were all lovely.  The weather had definitely taken a turn for the worst by Monday night so it worked well.  We really enjoyed the holiday, the area, the walking, the Alhambra and Malaga, in fact we were rather taken with mixing the walking and sight seeing it was a really good combination for us. Hats off to Philip for the transfers too, we had brilliant conversation on the way which made the journeys pass in no time.  A couple of friends have taken details off us after seeing our photos in Facebook. Thanks again, brilliant job, brilliant holiday.
Caroline & Family –  Self Guided Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – March 2019

An excellent short walking holiday. Dan knows his stuff and the walks and hotels were brilliant. Beautiful blossom and views. Thank you.
Jane & Friends – Walking In Blossom – February 2019

We really enjoyed our Grazalema self guided walk! The course was well described in the booklet provided, and while the conversion from our minds ‘miles’ to kilometers was at times a bit of challenge, we actually ended up doing quite well. The experience of seeing the country side and then the villages to arrive at was very unique and enjoyable. The accommodations were friendly and well positioned to share local culture. I highly recommend Ibex Trex self guided walks!
Bob – Self Guided Sierra de Grazalema – April 2018

We had a superb self-guided tour through Picos de Europa. We did not know these mountains existed but the scenery is breathtaking and the walking was great with a mix of moderate and hard to keep things interesting. During the week in June we walked in sun, rain and some fairly deep snow left over from winter, so you need a range of clothing. Walking poles were the best thing we brought. We’ll be recommending this region and tour to all our friends in Australia.
Anthony – Self-Guided Picos De Europa – June 2018

Thanks for making our holiday so good. The walks, accommodation and itinerary were all excellent.  I’ll be asking all the walkers for comments on the week but I am sure they will all be positive! Hopefully we can arrange a similar trip next Spring although maybe a few weeks later although you never know with the weather.
Scot Trek – –Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – April 2018

Extremely well organised and some super walks, really enjoyed the whole week. Thank you.
Geoff – Self Guided Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – May 2018

The amazing walking , everyday a different walk. The beautiful blossom trees, truly was a Walk in Blossom. Would have been great even without the blossom though!.
Elaine – Walking In Blossom – Feb 2018

Fantastic and could highly recommend. Communication with Dan was excellent from the first enquiry. The planning and timing of each day was just right. Dan was very considerate and knowledgeable.  The needs of everyone in the group were taken into account.
Mary – Walking In Blossom – Feb 2018

Great walking country.Should have spent more time in Grazalema the number and variety of walks is superb! It is a poor part of Spain that relies on tourism so by being there one benefits the local economy. It was well organised and the walking instructions were good. The hotels were all very good transfer arrangements worked well. 5 *****
John –  Self Guided Sierra de Grazalema – May 2018

Thank you for organising our holiday so well.We did 20k round trip as far as the first bridge in Cares gorge, which was brilliant for Pam’s hips. She’s planning to get even fitter for next time.We thought Sotres – the village, the hotel and restaurant and Ruben + girl friend was perfect. We managed to get a bit lost  on the last walk believe it or not so didn’t make Poo but did arrive back in Arenas at the right place. Excellent walking holiday.
Peter & Pam – Self-Guided Picos De Europa – Sept 2018

Thank you for a brilliant week in the Picos. I had heard great reports about that area, and it more than matched my expectations.
And the company was great!
Next up Nepal, October 21
Regards and thanks,
Greg – Across The Picos De Europa– Sept 2018

Excellent. A variety of treks in and around the Picos each provided their own challenges and rewards.  We were blessed with great weather in which to appreciate fully the stunning scenery.  Comfortable village accommodation and access to local and traditional foods – think blue cheeses and sidra! – further enhanced each days activities. Dan, our experienced and intrepid guide tailored our walks each day to suit the weather conditions and our groups circumstances, which was appreciated by all. His good humor and quick wit and the great company of our fellow walkers has ensured that we will never forget time in the Picos.
Ken & Joy – Across The Picos De Europa – June 2017

Dear Dan We had a great walking holiday and the weather was very kind to us!  All went very smoothly – Ruben was very reliable and the hotels were good (the last one in Arena especially).
All your instructions were very good.  It really is a beautiful area of the world… and not too many other tourists at this time of year (we hear the Ruta de Cares can be like the M25 in peak summer – the mind boggles!) With best regards

We had a wonderful time doing the Sierra Nevada and Alpujarras self guided tour. The views are amazing and there are a lot of beautiful little villages along the way. Although it was a self guided your, Dan was always available to answer any question, and share his knowledge of the area.
Looking forward for our next walking holiday with Ibex Trex!”

Mike & Gail – October 2017 – Guided Sierra de Grazalema

Many thanks for arranging such a great trekking holiday for the 3 of us, we really enjoyed the experience.
We were very pleased to have 2 nights at the Morayma hotel near Cadiar, as you said, it was particularly special.  We also very much liked Hotel Molino Cuatro Paradas.
All in all we loved this holiday and were very happy with how you organised it. – Jill & Friends – Andalucian Experience 13 nights – June 2017

Dear Dan,
We are now in Seville having completed our walking holiday.

Thanks for the tapas experience last night and everything else you did on the holiday.  We caught our connection to Granada OK.  See you in the future perhaps.
Trevor and Max – Guided Sierra de Grazalema – May 2017

Hello  Dan, We’re home again and wanted to thank you for a lovely holiday in the Sierra de Grazalema. We really enjoyed it! Good walks, and it was a wonderful time of year to be there – masses of wild flowers, butterflies, birdsong and birds. Yes, we did have three days of clouds and some heavy rain (at Grazalema of course, where I believe it is traditional), but we still walked every day and if anything the scenery looked more dramatic when the peaks were  draped in cloud! Best day was the hike from Benaojan to Villaluenga, just beautiful. And we stumbled on the San Marcos fiesta at Benaojan, and a bull-running fiesta at Grazalema; apparently the latter is normally in July but it ws the 25th anniversary of the ‘Pena’ concerned so they were having an extra one. Felt sorry for the bull but it was interesting to see the number of people who turned up to watch and the number of nutters who were willing to be chased around by a bull! And my concerns about the Quatro Paradas were groundless: we had a warm and friendly welcome, the room was spotless, the location by the river is beautiful, and the food is good. Yes there were a few silly niggles (drawer handles coming off and the bin not emptied) but overall we liked it. Special mentions must go to your taxi people, Isabel and Bernades, who were punctual and friendly and use magnificent Mercs, and to the driver (sorry, didn’t get his name) who took us from G to Ronda; also punctual, and made a heroic effort to drive the final 5 yards down an impossibly narrow alley to deliver us to the very door of the San Gabriel. Managed to persuade him to let us walk before a corkscrew became necessary to extract the car.
Finally, a special mention of you too for rescheduling the whole holiday at zero notice, quickly and efficiently. We really appreciated that and have made mention of it in our review to Responsible Travel. If we decide to return to the area we’ll definitely return to Ibex Trex! thanks again and best wishes for the future,
Jan and Bob –  Self Guided Sierra de Grazalema – May 2017

It was a really lovely experience walking through the mountain sides and blossoms. Great company, lovely hotel and you certainly looked after us, and fed us so well. I was only delayed by an hour.
Will certainly recommend ibex trex!
Susan – Walking In Blossom – March 2017

Really enjoyable – I do mean joy. It was such a pleasure to discover this part of the world and get a little bit (OK a lot) of exercise too. Challenging at times but worth it.
Karen – Walking In Blossom – March 2017

We have just returned from a week long walking holiday in Grazalema / Ronda organised by Ibex Trex. We asked for custom made itinerary and Dan came up trumps.  He managed to get tickets for 20 of us to visit Caminito del Rey and Cueva de la Pileta.  We were well looked after by Dan Shaffrey who couldn’t do enough for us.  He’s very likeable, sociable and trustworthy and bent over backwards for us.  We heartily recommend him and his walk leaders to anyone who loves walking in Andalucia, Spain. from John and Wendy on behalf of 20 Coventry (Andalucian) Ramblers – May 2016

Hello Dan,That was a great week!  I would rate it among the best walking holidays I have experienced, and as you know I’ve done some good ones. Everything about it was well planned and executed.  I enjoyed every day. I was delighted with the company of the Canadians.  I hope my pace wasn’t frustrating for them. Greg – Iceland Trip – July 2016

Hi Dan, Many thanks for all your work and assistance last week from the seven Malahide ladies. Regardless of the minor grouches I think I heard being expressed at the front of the van on Saturday, we all, truly, enjoyed our holiday and appreciate all you did on our behalf.Had to laugh when I looked at the Ibex Trex website to view your Ronda holiday. I saw something about it being the wettest area of Spain so think I might leave it a while before suggesting it for next year’s adventure. The Picos look good too. Not often we return from a trip to sunnier weather here in Dublin! Best regards from us all. Meris & 7 Friends – Self Guided Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – May 2016

Hey Dan Hope you’d a good night out on Saturday. I’d a great time in Spain. I’d no idea what to expect being so last minute but really glad I did it, it was such a laugh and brilliant way to see the country. I’m sure you’ve plenty of photos but just sending on some of mine if you need any for your website. Eimear – Sept 2016 – Across The Picos De Europa.

Our second holiday with Ibex – we all loved it as we did the first – beautiful valleys, glorious arrays of wildflowers, spectacular views throughout.  We enjoyed exploring the villages as we passed through – untouched by tourism.  The icing on the cake being the Poqueira Valley and for some a visit to the five star refugio,  not forgetting the snowballing!  The Hotel Mecina was a perfect choice,  they looked after our group so well.  Dan thank you so much for another great holiday in the Sierra Nevada, the choice of walks were perfect and the picnics were simply great.

Honeybone & 22 Friends Walking Group – Tailor-made Walking Holiday in The Sierra Nevada and Las Alpujarras – May 2016

This was our first self-guided walking holiday with lugguage transfer. Ibex Trex is an operator you can rely on, has outstandingly prepared self-guided files, is quick to respond to guests’ quibbles and does anything to keep their walkers happy, ready to be fit for the next day’s walking adventure (in the Alpujarras).I’d be perfectly happy booking another walk with Ibex Trex.
Erika & Hans – Sept 2016 – Self Guided Waking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada

Hola Dan, Thank you for a great walking experience. In spite of me: 1. ripping my clothes, 2. doing my best “Eddie The Eagle” interpretation and bowling over a fellow walker while tumbling down the mountain….I had a fun time and hope i am allowed to return! It was a great holiday.  Dan is a lovely man, and very capable, it ran like silk!  The walking was wonderful, just the right amount  of challenge, and the scenery was fantastic, he obviously put a lot of work into the package.

We will be back to you again. Mary – Self guided Walking Holiday Las Alpujarras – October 2015

We really enjoyed our walk and accommodation. Our favourite was the hotel at Mecina very peaceful and great hosts. The food was amazing at trevelez. We wish we had crampons to get up to the lakes but still a beautiful walk. We are now doing a 9 day walk with camino ways west of Barcelona and it doesn’t compare.

Thanks and good luck with the business we would like to start up something similar in New Zealand but we don’t have the villages.

Donna & Bruce – Self Guided Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – January 2015

Hi Dan, Just to say thanks for a fantastic holiday last week,  it was wonderful to experience such a beautiful unspoilt landscape. Hotels, food, arrangements, were all first class, I wouldn’t have changed anything. I hope to be back next year to walk in Grazalema. All the best, Carys Walking Las Alpujarras & The SIerra Nevada – October 2014

Good morning Dan,
We’re all settling back in to a wet and rainy Cork – it’s out with the raingear from now on.
I hope you’re not too ‘miserable’ without us!
Well, you were wrong (again) – they all want to go back to the Alpujarras – even the ones that haven’t been.
I reckon they’ve all fallen in love with you Dan or it’s the spirit of the Sierra Nevadas.
Cath – Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – September 2014

Dan, thanks for a wonderful weeks walking in the Sierra Nevada last week. It rivalled my trips to Kilimanjaro and Nepal for enjoyment. Last week reminded me that I don’t have to take on very big challenges to have a great time in the mountains. I was particularly happy with my form on Mulhacen. My strength is my endurance and ability to keep going at a steady pace. I will never be a quick downhill walker! Where to next…? Iceland sounds interesting, and do keep me informed of any other novel treks. I’m always on the lookout for the next adventure…Greg Walking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – September 2014

We absolutely loved our walking holiday with Ibex Trex. It couldn’t have been better. The hotels along the way were all lovely and accommodated our vegetarian needs, especially the one in Trevelez. We also loved the Moraymer with its gorgeous views. The route notes and maps for the walks were also really clear and we managed not to get lost once! The wildlife, scenery and views were spectacular and we would definitely come again but perhaps at a slightly cooler time of year! We also really enjoyed our trip to the Alhambra and Granada. What an amazing place.
Rhiannon + Friend – Self Guided Trekking Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – August 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.  The organisation was great,  the walks really fantastic and we could never have found those routes ourselves.  It was so good to have the instructions from someone who really knew the area. We were also struck by the particularly unspoilt nature of the alpujarras.  I don’t think we heard any traffic noise the whole week!…We liked the arrangement of spending 2 nights in each hotel. Walks were a good length. Perhaps a bit more choice of food would have been good.
But generally really fantastic and we would highly recommend it.
Many thanks and best wishes
Karen and David – Self Guided Waling Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada – June 2014

Another great week in Spain.
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip again. We managed to squeeze in an extra walk…Grazalema is quite lovely. It was a pity that we couldn’t do the Ruta de Pinsapar, but we enjoyed our 3 nights there. The walk/climb to the summit of Simoncon was particularly worthwhile, and gave us several sightings of ibex….The hotel in Ronda is great – very pleasant owners, and a lovely breakfast – delivered early to allow us to head off for our early flight.

Karen & Paul – Self Guided Walking Grazalema – June 2014

Dear Dan I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my time in Grazalema with Ibex Trex.
The walking was great and scenery and weather wonderful.  Your knowledge of the area and sense of humour, combined with good food and excellent accommodation resulted in a truly memorable week. Thank you Ann
Grazalema Walking Special – May 2014

Just returned from our second walking holiday in Spain with Ibex Trex. Another brilliant week spent in  a wonderful part of the country,Grazalema and Ronda.  The walking was great as was the weather, and the hotels we stayed in were excellent. Thanks to Dan and team for introducing us to this lovely area. The holiday was greatly enjoyed by all our members. We look forward to the next one.

Hi Dan/Chris/Joe. Once again, thanks for a super holiday. On yesterday’s walk, reminiscing was the main activity, as well as speculation about next year’s possibility. Hope it works and that you can see how we value such walking. Very best wishes, Ken and Ann. Group Walking Holiday In Grazalema – June 2014

Dear Dan,
To add my thanks: it was a great walking week. Your itinerary was well judged and the hotels were terrific. It suited us perfectly. I really enjoyed staying on at the last hotel – superb location for painting and sketching and watching the world go by.
Chris and Billy were excellent sources of information, and the conversations on the trips livened up the journeys and gave good context for the place and its peoples.
Many thanks. – Elaine & Allan – March 2014 –Self Guided  Walking Las Alpujarras & Sierra Nevada

We took the family to Sierra de Ronda, for a week’s walking and to celebrate my husband’s 50th Birthday. We all enjoyed the trip, so good to have someone else planning the accommodation and routes. The children had fun too, enjoying the breakfasts and Hotel food. Beautiful scenery, very unspoilt, providing a true taste of Spain….
Thanks again, we may well be back to try another route.
Kind regards,

Hi Dan,

We got home safely after a most enjoyable ‘walking holiday’, hope your Dad got back to Gorey safely too. From both of us a very sincere thanks to you; it was really great place for walking and we had very suitable hotels and most enjoyable meals and chat. We always felt safe and you made a special effort to look after everyone at their different levels of ability as well as giving us a guide and info on their sights and places we visited. Your Dad kept a special eye on us and we had great chats at the rear of the walks. Give our best wishes to Alison and Gilbert, if they are still with you this week.
Looking forward to coming back to Spain and walking with you again.
Kind regards,

Thanks so much for the fabulous holiday.  The two weeks we spent with you in Alpujarras and Grazalema were exactly what we were looking for – small group, interesting villages, fantastic walks, charming hotels, good food and wine, all at an unbeatable price.   Your knowledge of local flora and fauna was excellent and you definitely have a knack for spotting birds and wildlife.   All in all, a brilliant holiday. You nailed it!

October 2013 – Self Guided – Trekking Las Alpujarras And The Sierra Nevada

Hi Dan, hope all is well, as promised a few lines of huge thanks for a superb organised trip. We spent an amazing 9 days self guided trekking in the Sierra Nevada/Alpujarras every day exceeded our expectations. The diversity of the varying landscapes was truly breathtaking. Both hotels, Finca Los Llanos and Alquiera de Morayma had wonderful character, exceptional service and the food was always fresh and wholesome. Dan provided a first class timely transfer service to and from the fantastic itinerary routes he had tailored together for us, good descriptive walk notes, accurate mileage with that much need local bar at the end of the day for local Tapas and cool beer(s).J We wish we were still there but hopefully it is NOT a once in a lifetime trip. Million thanks Carmel & Steve. September 2013 – 9 Nights Self Guided – Trekking Sierra Nevada

“Thank you so much for a great trip.  Your planning and arrangements were seamless and beyond expectations.  We especially enjoyed and appreciated Chris as our “local contact.”  He was most informative about the area and helped immensely with local pronunciations.  All of the hotels were fantastic and the ones with a pool were most appreciated as we had great, hot weather.  We were very impressed with the diversity of the hikes; no two seemed the same.  And the mix of easier and longer days was just right.  We had a blue-bird day on our hike up and over Mulhacen and, if one had to choose, that was probably the highlight of the holiday, although not by much.

And Dan, you were great to deal with during the planning phase.  Your email replies were always prompt and all questions were addressed readily.  I always felt very comfortable corresponding with you.  The Hotel Maestranza in Sevilla was a great recommendation.  Muchas gracias para todo.  We will highly recommend Ibextrex! “

May 2013 – Walking Grazalema Self Guided Holiday

“Hi Dan,
Just a note to say a huge thank you for making our holiday so enjoyable last week.  Although the weather wasn’t on our side all the time we had a taste of what the Sierra Nevada had to offer…and of course the walk on Thursday made up for all the mist etc earlier on in the week…we did a 12 mile hike yesterday but it wasn’t the same really…missed the stunning vistas!!
We would like to join you again, if not in the Alpujarras, then in the other region you mentioned…in the meantime we may well slip back to the Hotel de  Morayma for a quick break between now and then!  In the meantime, very many thanks again for a great week.
Kindest regards,”

“Hi Dan and Chris
We all got home safely after a short delay at Malaga.
Thank you both so much for a super holiday.  You looked after us all so well.  Everybody really enjoyed the week.
The hotels were good, we especially enjoyed the second one, so different.
It was lovely to meet your wives and your lovely children, also your dad Dan.  A lovely man, he was so helpful to me on the firs tday. We all send our thanks and best wishes for your future plans.  Hope there will be lots of business coming your way.  We shall certainly recommend you to all our walking friends.
Look after yourselves and once again very many thanks”

John & Jim – Self Guided Grazalema – April 2013

“The hikes were exceptional, even in the rain and wind (and even Hail)!  Hotels were great as was the delightful staff at each location.   The centered, self guided hiking concept is great for folks who don\’t want to change hotels often and you were so helpful in answering all of our questions ahead of time!  We had a great parking place near the hotel in Grazalema and didn\’t have to move the car the entire time.  You were correct in suggesting the 2 places in the Sierra Nevada\’s because each was so unique.  Thank you!”  Donna

“We liked the hotels very much, the rooms clean and had everything we needed, and all the staff at each place were friendly and nice.  The Maestranza hotel in Seville is a great location; we stayed at the Maestranza in Malaga and would highly recommend it.  It is a full service hotel, and they park your car for you, and you can walk to everything.  We were lucky to see Semana Santa while we were there.  In Granada we stayed in the hotel you recommended and loved it.  It too was in the center of the historic district and we walked everywhere.

We left Spain feeling like we had a trip of a lifetime…great and challenging hiking; and wonderful historical sites in each of the cities”

Jane Self Guided Walking Holiday March 2013

“We arrived in Granada to be me at the airport and transferred to our first hotel in the beautiful Sierra Nevada. We walked along the Las Alpujarra valley staying in wonderful hotels and being guided by Dan. Funny and friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. We knew we were in safe hands.
All in all a fantastic walking holiday and we are recommending Ibex Trex to all our friends”.Cheers Tom & Katie Guided Walking Holiday March 2013

“Thanks to Ibex Trex for a wonderful walking holiday in Las Alpujarras. Hotel Alqueria De Morayma was an amazing place, lovely rooms, bar and dining room, with even a quirky kind of museum. Walking in blossom was a fantastic experience and the almond blossom exceeded our expectations: it was everywhere. I would recommend anyone considering a holiday in the mountains to try the walking in blossom week. The temperature was perfect for walking.
The walking was exactly the right level. Dan was an excellent guide, he was very knowledgeable about the area and shared lots of interesting facts with us.
Thanks to Dan for a fab holiday. We have great memories and photos and may return to undertake another Ibex Trex trip soon.”
Paula – Walking In Blossom February 2013

“We were a group of 6 (+60) Danes who asked Dan to arrange a self-guided tour in Las Alpuljarras in early September. He made a great tour for us. We enjoyed the surroundings, the splendid views, the fine weather, the pools, the beers, the wine and in most cases also the food. We certainly can recommend Ibex Trex who took well care of us.”
Poul, Anne, Peter, Helle, Lars & Alice, Copenhagen. September 2012

“Muchas Gracias por dos semanas fantastica!!!
The first week of guided hikes were superb – we thoroughly enjoyed the variety of hikes and all the information you shared with us.
the second week of self guided walking was also enjoyable but we missed your good company.Nevertheless we found our way and made it to our next destination.
The accommodation and food throughout our stay in Las Alpujarras were beyond our expectations.
Finishing hikes by mid-afternoon and then being able to enjoy some leisure time around the pool before dinner each day made it seem like we were having two vacations in one.
We certainly will have no hesitation in recommending Ibex Trex to our friends.
Cuatro Senoras de Canada – Judy & Friends – Las Alpujarras Week & Self Guided June 2012

“A group from Iceland had a wonderfull walking week in the beautifull Alpujarras and Sierra Nevanda mountains. The hotels were good, Hotel Finca los llanos and Alquiera de Morayma both hotels had its charm. But the latter was very special and lured some of the group to stay at home one day. The walks were all great we walked through country side and white willages as well as high mountain wilderness, we even saw an ibex. As we were a big group Jo, Dan’s father came from Ireland to make sure that nobody in the group was left behind, good service. thank you for a perfect tour. there will sure come more groups from Iceland. Steinunn – Icelandic Group May 2012

“I did a weeks walking in la Alpujarras with Ibex Trex in Oct 2012.Like the rest of the group I had never been on a trekking holiday but it all worked out very well. We were picked up from Malaga Airport by our guide and host Dan Shaffrey. Dan took us the two hour journey to our first village stop off where he got us booked into the hotel. From there it was very easy. The 2 hotel accommodation (we changed location mid week)was very good as was the food. They even provided pack lunches so the only out of pocket expense was the odd beer and glass of wine but prices for these were still much cheaper than the uk. About 1.50 euro. the holiday was therefore great value for money at circa £1000 inc all flights, most food and drink
The walks were great, challenging, dramatic and visually stunning but when a few of us asked for slightly easier routes (age catching up with all of us I think) Dan happily varied to alt routes, still fantastic but not quiet as challenging. Dan also had great knowledge of the local flora and fauna.
All in all in was a great holiday and one i would be glad to repeat and recommend.” Brian – Autumn Special Group October 2012

“Joined the Walking Las Alpujarras Week in September and have written to say thank you to Dan and Ibex Trex for hosting such a fabulous holiday. There were 6 of us, all individuals and not knowing each other at the start but by the end we were good friends and I think I speak for all on the holiday, it was great. Thanks again. Jane Walking Las Alpujarras September 2012

“Dear Dan
Thank you so much for the superb holiday you gave the ten of us this month.
The walks were perfect: just the right degree of difficulty and very well described in your notes. The landscape is just breathtaking; great variety of views and of territory.
We very much appreciated the feeling you were on tap to help if we needed you, such as the day when you picked up some of us at two different places after a phone call to say that the distance had turned out a little further than we could manage. Your calm driving, efficient luggage transport and perfectly executed transfers gave us a great feeling of confidence and security. And your choice of hotels was just right: comfortable and welcoming, non fussy and suitable for walkers.
The soggy day in Granada provided a pleasant change: thank you for organising this and once more being on tap while we were there.
We came away feeling refreshed and thoroughly well looked after: everyone agreed that they would recommend Ibex without reservation.
with thanks and all good wishes” John And 9 Friends – November 2012

“Just to let you know that we had an excellent holiday, which we both enjoyed very much. We were very lucky with the weather and the scenery was fantastic. We enjoyed the hotels, each of which was very different, but all with excellent food and service.” Ros & Mike – Self Guided – March 2012

“We all had a brilliant holiday. All the walks were great, day 3 the Mecina circuit was our favourite. The accommodation was very good…..
All in all a great holiday and would highly recommend both the trip itself and the group Ibextrex.”

Dublin Walking Club Group in Andalucia ( Sierra Nevada/Alpujarras Region)

Recently (April ’12) sixteen DWC club-members spent a most enjoyable week in Andulacia, walking in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada/Alpujarras ranges. Our trip was arranged through IBEX TREX , which arranged accommodation, transport, baggage transfers, packed lunches, day-trip to Granada, etc. Read more here

‘Thank you so much for a very successful and excellent walking week – enjoyed by all. We are now getting our breath back and receiving lots of thank you messages and congratulatory comments on the week. Again many thanks to both you and Amy. Good luck for the future.’ West Berkshire Ramblers

‘Excellent walking holiday, thank you for your organisation and walks’ Galway Walking group

We had an excellent week, the walks were generally very good and varied – we spotted wild boar for the first time so were really excited about that….Must say we really enjoyed the break, the majority of the treks and the hotels were superb, and the locals ever so friendly. The Mecina loop walk and the Siete Laguna’s were our favourite, even wading through a foot of snow, closely followed by the final day – even considering the confusing end. Many thanks for arranging, and to Chris for helping us Veggies. We will definitely recommend you to our like minded friends and colleagues.Very best wishes” Ady and Deb – Self Guided Walking Holiday March 2012.

In the late 15th century, this area was considered almost impenetrable when the Moors retreated there, before their final expulsion from Spain. Our walks passed through many areas still accessible only on foot and pack-mules were frequently seen in use. We stayed in four traditional high-mountain villages i.e. Capleleira, Mecina, Trevelez and Cadiar. These have retained a typical Moorish character. Houses were flat-roofed and painted a brilliant white. Days were quite warm (20°-25°C.) but, at 1,500-1,800 metres, nights were crisp and cool. All around were steeply-terraced groves of olive, walnut, etc. There was much evidence of sophisticated Moorish irrigation skills e.g. canals at high altitudes, distributing snow-melt water. However, we also passed through vast areas of arid scrub-land.

The hotels used were very comfortable and served excellent food. Each was of a rustic but individually quite distinct character. This particularly applied to the atmospheric Alqueria de Morayma hotel complex (where we spent the final two nights.)

Dan Shaffrey (assisted by his also very-fit father, Joe,) led all the walks. Along the way, he provided a flow of informed detail on fauna and flora, local history, and culture. Our walks brought some spectacular vistas e.g.in the Poquiera Gorge, the La Taha area and the Rio Trevelez valley.

The most difficult walk was on a glaciation cirque between Mulhacen (the highest European peak outside the Alps and Pyrenees) and the Alcazaba mountains. Challenges were posed by the altitude (approx. 3,000 m) and the need to cross several snowfields.

In the course of a week of bright sunshine (low-to-mid-twenties C.), the elusive ibex (near the village of Berchules) and soaring booted-eagles were sighted. The almost –invisible Golden Oriole and cuckoo were heard. The ‘Bat-tailed’ and many other species of butterflies (e.g. Painted Lady, Moroccan Orange Tip, etc.) were all about in the lush river- valleys. Numerous snakes and lizards crossed our paths, harmlessly, but we avoided the larger Oscellated Lizard as (perhaps needlessly) we feared its bite!

Our ‘day-off’ consisted of a day-trip to Granada city, with an emphasis on the Alhambra. We had a memorable tour of the Palacios Nazaries and learned a little more of those who had shaped the Alpujarras landscapes many centuries before.

All-in-all, then, IBEXTREX provided a really enjoyable week for us, ‘hands-on’ , with challenging walks through unforgettable countryside. MW/GA Dublin Walking Club 2012

“Better late than never. I meant to reply last year.
The holiday memories are all good.
We appreciated the variety of the walks. I loved the flame colours on the trees and views of village life, whilst Robert’s favourite day was the walk to the lakes. I liked the different styles of accommodation and the food was good.” Pat & Robert – Self Guided Walking Holiday – March 2012

“Thank you for a really great introduction to the Sierra Nevada. We had a really good time – we felt the medium level itinerary show cased the area really well, routes we would never have found for ourselves and we really enjoyed all the hotels, again I’m sure we wouldn’t have found such good places to stay. Chris was really helpful and friendly – it felt good to have someone in the country – and made us feel very spoilt having an itinerary built around what we wanted to do. Thank you so much for being so flexible with changing the night’s stay at Trevelez, my fault I felt I would not be up for walking two long 18km days back to back. Had a lovely restful stay in Trevelez enjoying the mountains and roof top terrace views.”

“The hotel Alqueria de Morayma, in its idyllic setting, was the perfect base for the week’s Wildlife Walking holiday. The walks were varied, passing through lovely scenery and local villages. As a reasonably fit 68-year-old, I found the level of difficulty was just right. The enthusiasm and knowledge of Gary, the wildlife guide, was a delight, and I learned a lot. We saw about 70 different bird species. Dan’s faultless organisation ensured a happy week, and the hotel’s excellent food and local wine, together with Sally’s picnics (including a slice of wonderful home-made cake) ensured a gain of 2 kilos, even after all that walking. Happy days!” Judith

Arnside and District Natural History Society Trip to Alpujurras, May 2012

Thank you for organising such an excellent trip for us. The two hotels were excellent and full of character. We thoroughly enjoyed the area and our day trip to Granada. As a Natural History Group you chose some excellent visit locations that kept us absorbed for hours. The arrangements were informal, which we liked, but the logistics and transport arrangements always worked. Gary, our natural history guide, was really excellent. He was very knowledgeable, ultra enthusiastic and always highly amusing. You both worked very hard to ensure everything worked. All in all you both combined to make it a very memorable trip.

Many thanks,

Bob Hamnett on behalf of the Arnside and District Natural History Society
