A Piece About Iceland By The Guide

Iceland is a unique country. The scenery is dramatic and often quite unbelievable with unusual colours in the mountains and hot water springs abounding. This landscape is a true walker’s paradise. All parts of the country offer interesting and challenging walks. To reach many of them you may have to drive hundreds of kilometers in order to be able to walk between huts in the highlands or between little settlements in west , north or east.

We want to take you to some of the special and interesting walking areas in the vicinity of Reykjavík frequented by the locals, as well as some of the most popular tourist attractions of Iceland Gullfoss,Geysir and Þingvellir and to make a stunning walk in a remote wally under the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull.

The last years the Icelanders have been walking in their own country as never before, associations and companies offer walking to a mountain in the vicinity of Reykjavík or in the near distance once a week or once a month. The possibilities are almost endless. We invite you to explore some of these interesting places known to many Icelanders but not so many foreign guests.

You will stay in the capital area half of the time from where there is a short drive to many exciting trails on the Reykjanes peninsula and Hellisheiði heath land. This peninsula is a home to a multitude of geological phenomena and seemingly endless lava fields and there the mid-Atlantic ridge rises above the sea-level. The Hellisheiði heath land is the second biggest high temperature geothermal area of Iceland with abundance of hot springs in which some of them it is possible to tack a bath in the nature. You will also visit the famous and beautiful waterfall Gullfoss and the sprouting Geysir, walk in the national park and UNESCO site of Þingvellir and if the weather allows mount the most popular mountain of the country Mt Esja which is in the vicinity of the capital Reykjavík. Last but not least visit the stunning glacier valley of the Thunder god Thor (Þórsmörk) and walk in this rugged and amazing area set between 3 glaciers on of them is the famous Eyjafjallajökull
